Soil Survey

Thats righ! I dove right into work today! Today was our second day out in the field mapping on our own. We planned to use the Giddings Probe which is a large auger mounted to the back of the truck. However, it was too wet since storm had just went through and we couldn't take the truck off the road without creating ruts or getting stuck.
This photo was taken at the third hole we dug. It was much like the holes we dug during out training. We hit a layer that was made of hard shale covered in calcium accumulations. We pounded through the layer with the heavy (45 pound) bar you see on the left with the piece of red tape on it. But the the pieces were still too large still to pull out with the bucket auger which is the silver instrument laying on the ground on the right. So I had to reach down to grab and pull out the large pieces. My coworker was ready with camera! After we got through the rock layer we were able to auger down easily.
